LONDON:British and European drugmakers AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced Monday that they have launched a global collaboration to study the potential effects of a single-dose esomeprazole and a single-dose proton pump inhibitor (PPI) on people with chronic heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and ulcers.

In addition, AstraZeneca said the two companies will collaborate to design and manufacture a single-dose proton pump inhibitor that will be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) in March 2020.

Esomeprazole, the generic version of Prilosec, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly prescribed for heartburn and GERD, and is used to treat the symptoms of acid reflux, ulcers and other stomach problems.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved esomeprazole as the first-line treatment for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has not approved esomeprazole for these indications.
