NEW YORK (AP) — A federal health department is considering selling generic versions of an over-the-counter medication to treat heartburn and other symptoms of heartburn if the drugs are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Ahead, the agency is reviewing whether generic versions of drugs that are approved by the FDA to treat heartburn are safe to use in treating heartburn.
The FDA approved over-the-counter medications, called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), have been available to treat heartburn and have been sold in the United States since 1998. The Food and Drug Administration rejected three of the generic versions of Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid in June.
The FDA approved three PPIs in the United States, including Prevacid, Prilosec, and Prilosec Plus in April. Prilosec has been sold by Eli Lilly, the maker of the brand drug. Prevacid has been sold over-the-counter by GlaxoSmithKline and Prilosec by Merck & Co.

PPIs work by blocking enzymes that are produced by cells in the stomach and small intestine, the agency said. These enzymes are responsible for digesting food and reducing the acidity in food.
